Learn words connected with sport in Italian
One of the first things a visitor to Italy notices is that Italians look very slim and fit. This could be attributed to the mediterranean diet eaten here but it’s also because exercise is very important and most people like to practicare uno sport (do a sport). The most popular, as in other countries, is probably il calcio (football) but there are many others.
Children usually start doing sport at school, with pallacanestro (basketball) for boys or pallavolo (volleyball) for girls, but parents also like their children to partecipare (take part) in after-school activities such as scherma (fencing) or nuoto (swimming).
One sport where Italians excel is il ciclismo (cycling), particularly in the North where there are plenty of strenuous mountain routes to struggle up and down. Alpinismo (mountain climbing) and lo sci (skiing) are also popular for the same reason.
Elsewhere, Italians often opt for la palestra (the gym) as a way to stare in forma (keep fit) or simply make do with a weekly passeggiata (walk) in the hills.
