Learn how to use the present simple in Italian
The Italian present simple is quite a handy tense to know as not only is it used in the same way as the English tense, but it can also substitute the near future and the present continuous.
eg. I make the tea (faccio il te)
I’ll make the tea (faccio il te)
I’m making the tea (faccio il te)
As with all tenses in Italian, the ending changes to reflect who is speaking and so the pronoun can be omitted. There are three types of ‘conjugation’ with Italian verbs, which basically means that the endings are slightly different depending on the ending of the infinitive.
1st ending: -are
Verbs such as parlare (speak), ballare (dance) or chiamare (call) will use these endings:
Example - parlare
I speak (io) parlo
you speak (tu) parli
he speaks (lui) parla
she speaks (lei) parla
we speak (noi) parliamo
you speak (voi) parlate
they speak (loro) parlano
2nd ending; -ere
Verbs such as credere (believe), prendere (take) or mettere (put) will use these endings:
Example - credere
I believe (io) credo
you believe (tu) credi
he believes (lui) crede
she believes (lei) crede
we believe (noi) crediamo
you believe (voi) credete
they believe (loro) credono
3rd ending; -ire
Verbs such as finire (finish), capire (understand) or tradire (betray) will use these endings:
Example - finire
I finish (io) finisco
you finish (tu) finisci
he finishes (lui) finisce
she finishes (lei) finisce
we finish (noi) finiamo
you finish (voi) finite
they finish (loro) finiscono
