Advice on staying in a hotel in Italy - vocabulary and useful phrases

Today it’s never been easier to organise an inexpensive short break in Italy.
Budget airlines such as Ryanair and Easyjet fly to a large number of beautiful Italian cities and with the internet you have access to a huge number of alberghi (hotels) or bed and breakfasts throughout the country.

If you are booking via the internet, make sure you check the indirizzo (address) on google maps or similar. You don’t want to find yourself stuck out in the sticks with no mezzo di trasporto (form of transport)! You might also want to check how to get from the airport to the hotel. Taxis are the easiest option but never the cheapest. Check the website of the airport you are flying to - there’s usually bus routes or train timetables listed. The airport usually sells biglietti autobus (bus tickets) from kiosks just inside the main doors.

Once arrived at your hotel you may find they speak English, but when in Rome…! Checking-in usually involves giving your cognome (surname) and prenotazione (booking details). They will ask for your documenti (passports) which they’ll take and give back the next day. They’ll give you your chiave (key) and explain quale piano (which floor) your camera (room) is on. They’ll probably tell you a che ora (what time) you’ll have la colazione (breakfast) and la cena (dinner).

Depending on the type of hotel, most places have at least these servizi (facilities) in the room: asciugamani (towels), doccia (shower) or vasca (bath), phon (hairdryer) cassaforte (safe) and aria condizionata (air-conditioning).

So, what are you waiting for? Buona vacanza!
